ABSTRACT

The result of a historical review of hurricanes that have affected the provinces of Havana and Havana City in the period between 1799 and 1998 is presented and the methodology applied is discussed. In addition, a climatologic description of the behavior of these tropical organisms is made, The distribution function that fits best the series was found and return periods of most interest were calculated. The registered hurricane activity was compared for different 50 years periods, showing an important decrease in the current period. A brief description of the most intense hurricanes and its climatic behavior was made. This work has allowed us to improve our knowledge about this kind of storms. It is quite useful in the assessment of risks and vulnerability of different localities and economic facilities on both provinces. It intends to contribute to the attainment of a better understanding of hurricanes and their impact.
